Non-Turf Cricket Case Study

Summary
Stuart Canvas was approached by a private client who required a bespoke Non-Turf Training Facility to be installed on the ground within the client’s private garden.

Challenges
Even though the current garden was mainly suitable for the installation, other measures had to be taken to ensure the facility could be installed to a high standard, including:

  • Levelling the hardcore base
  • Installing timber edges below the level of the surrounding borders to ensure that the carpet will sit flush.
  • Concreting sockets to hold the steel work in place

Stuart Canvas Solution
The existing hardcore base was suitable to be used as a base for the training facility and so did not need replacing, however the base did need to be appropriately levelled before the carpet could be installed. Timber edges were then installed below the level of the surrounding borders to ensure that when the carpet was laid that it would sit flush against the oak beams.  After the timber edges were fixed into place, the team laid a geomembrane on the hardcore base which stops particle migration and weeds from growing through, prolonging the life of the playing surface above it.  After the membrane was securely fastened, 20 tonnes of Olliset could then be tipped onto the membrane and levelled off with a feather edge of two metres. The batting shockpad could then be fitted.  The team then began laying the carpet and securing it by nailing the carpet into the timber edges. Where the infill carpet met the playing carpet, the joint was glued into place, achieving a high-quality finish.

Outcomes
The Non-turf installation was completed to a high standard, completely bespoke to its surroundings and can now be used by the owners to get extra hours of practise from the comfort of their own back garden.
