A Jump Forward for Cleavley Athletics

Sandpits are prone to water damage especially during winter months when ground frost and damp weather conditions can cause the sand to harden making a sandpit unsafe and unusable for athletes.  Traditional solutions for coving sand pits which consist of a flat sheet tarpaulin which is fastened either side of the pit with pegs can cause their own problems.  A flat sheet tarpaulin can allow rainwater to pool in the middle which then can overflow on to the sand below, they also do not protect against morning damp or condensation soaking into the sand.

Stuart Canvas was approached by Cleavley to design a new cover system which not only protects the sandpit better than a traditional solution but one that could be easily and quickly removed by athletes themselves to reduce the time lost preparing the sandpit before training can commence.   A bespoke retractable tunnel system was designed which, features a unique 1m high apex system on roller wheels that allows the tunnel to fold up when pushed to allow access to the sandpit in seconds.  The tunnel system consists of individual PVC panels, 1.1m wide which are produced to the same width of each pentagraph centre of the tunnel frame. This generates a durable waterproof system which allows water to run off the cover and away from the sand below. It also prevents the cover from touching the sand to eliminate condensation.  This system produces complete coverage while still being quick and simple to retract and recover.

Cleavley Athletics Track is  West Manchester’s premier sporting venues, where visitors can choose between long-distance and sprint events, as well as field events like shot put, javelin, hammer and long jump.
